  • stockfinster – [2009] Dead Line

    stockfinster – [2009] Dead Line

Carefully crafted electronica. This is a gem from now defunct netlabel Sutemos, back from 2009. Artist stockfinster, whom I have reviewed in this blog before, is a household name in the Creative Commons scene, and for a reason. His productions occupy a quiet, warm corner somewhere between New Age ambient and IDM electronica. I like…

  • Esgi – [2008] Echoes in Time

Esgi – [2008] Echoes in Time

Soundtrack-style ambient music. This album developed out of writing a score to an unnamed project. To me, the result would make the perfect fit with one of the older Civilization or Age of Empires titles.

  • Frenic – [2011] Lessons From The Past

Frenic – [2011] Lessons From The Past

Melodic instrumental hip hop. Soft beats and beautifully aranged samples make this album a very special and very seductive entry into the instrumental hip hop genre. The tracks are not completely free of repetitive arrangements, but they have less repetetive arrangements than this sentence contains repetitive arrangements… 😉

  • Gorje Hewek – [2007] Sur-Dramatic Nature

    Gorje Hewek – [2007] Sur-Dramatic Nature

Silently impressive. Gorje Hewek is a master of deep house and similar styles. He has performed at Burning Man 2016. In this old release back at trusty netlabel Fuselab, he shows a more silent side of his craft.

  • Smooth – [2015] Vintage 02

    Smooth – [2015] Vintage 02

Elegant monotony. Six tracks, spanning almost one hour, produced using vintage equipment, elegantly fill the air with damp synth sounds and calm beats. Be prepared for Deep House for dark moments.

  • Point – [2014] Flatpad EP

    Point – [2014] Flatpad EP

Cinematic electro grandeur. Located somewhere between movie trailer oomph and ambient big beat electro, there is a small Flatpad EP. Only four tracks long, it covers 30 minutes with unusual yet tasty tunes. Fat bass lines and thick beats reign supreme, but vocal samples and synth pads create some ambience.

  • We&Dem – [2007] Nosotros Y Ellos

    We&Dem – [2007] Nosotros Y Ellos

Laid-back Reggae tunes. Spanish band We&Dem, according to Spanish Wikipedia article, has been founded in 2002 in pictoresque Zaragoza, Aragon. Influenced by Bob Marley, they craft solid, unsurprising Reggae tracks. 15 tracks, just short over one hour, made it into this 2007 release, which was published on Jamendo and Autoeditados, a Spanish publishing platform. Find…

  • Eye – [2007] Plays

    Eye – [2007] Plays

Meditative psychadelic rock. Ok, the release notes advertise this as Pop, “without a shadow of doubt”. I tend to disagree, but what do words matter? For a change, I’ll discuss three of the release’s 7 tracks.

  • Frenic – [2012] Present And Correct

Frenic – [2012] Present And Correct

A lesson in Funk remixes. This classic release by from Bulgarian netlabel Dusted Wax Kingdom showcases UK artist Frenic. His trademark is blending together vintage voice samples and funk music, served with some big beats.

  • Various Artists – [2009] Music From All Around The World

Various Artists – [2009] Music From All Around The World

Timeless introductory drug for to-become Creative Commons addicts. This is less of a review and more of a SHOUT-OUT to make you GET. THIS. RELEASE. 17 good to excellent tracks have been gathered. They show both how diverse (and enjoyable) from 2009 and earlier is.

  • Sasha Raskin – [2011] Only Music

Sasha Raskin – [2011] Only Music

Electronic soft rock. Jerusalem-based artist Sasha Raskin makes us a great present by releasing his debut album for free at the netlabel diym. To cite French reviewer @adiffuser: Do not rely on the efficiency and the energy of the first title to automatically store the music of Sasha Raskin in the category electro-pop mainstream.

  • Dr. Mindflip – [2014] Every Waking Moment

Dr. Mindflip – [2014] Every Waking Moment

Quirky indie pop. Netlabel blocSonic keeps to its mission to deliver solid indie music, this time in form of swingy pop tunes. Acoustic instrumentation (drum, piano, bass, acoustic guitar) + vocals create a solid soundstage and 4 slightly eclectic songs.

  • Boogie Belgique – [2013] Nightwalker (Vol. 1)

    Boogie Belgique – [2013] Nightwalker (Vol. 1)

Vintage remixes done right. Wow, simply wow. Before encountering this album, I thought that remixing old vinyl recordings necessarily leads to repetitive hip hop background tracks. But this release, presented by netlabel Dusted Wax Kingdom, fortunately breaks with this rule. Modern sounds seamlessly blend with old audio samples.

  • Auditive Escape – [2013] Profound

    Auditive Escape – [2013] Profound

Convincing downtempo trip hop. Ok, “convincing” might sound a bit too corporate for this lush piece of an album, flirting with ambient genre elements. French artist Jean Patier really knows how to turn the knobs to create deceptively simple chill out tracks. Read on for my two (from 10) favourite tracks and the release link.

  • Various Artists – [2009] Netaudio 2009 – Acroplane and The Centrifuge

Various Artists – [2009] Netaudio 2009 – Acroplane and The Centrifuge

Classic netaudio sampler. Nowadays, netlabel Acroplane release new albums on Bandcamp. Unfortunately, they did not move all their releases there. Fortunately, their back catalogue is archived at my favourite well-known place. This compilation has 18 diverse tracks from chiptunes over breakcore to glitchy IDM.

  • Th.e n.d – [2009] Schizophrenic Birth

    Th.e n.d – [2009] Schizophrenic Birth

Minimal downtempo goodness. Berlin artist Th.e n.d. seems to prefer quality over quantity. This EP, released 2009 at the Acustronica netlabel, only contains 3 tracks. Yet every track is distinct in style and remarkably well produced. Unconventional sound combinations and laidback tunes are the common theme.

  • Aydio – [2009] Deltitnu EP

    Aydio – [2009] Deltitnu EP

Laid-back trip hop with grooves. Where conventional trip hop serves monotonous boredom, Aydio excels with groovy bass lines, atmospheric guitar samples and a blend of vintage and modern soundscapes. 4 tracks or 20 minutes worth of great background music await you.

  • Just Plain Ant – [2009] Dig Deep

Just Plain Ant – [2009] Dig Deep

Fresh hip hop. I don’t listen to a lot of rap music. In fact, this is the first review to populate the tags hip hop and rap here. This album has it all: opulent instrumental tracks, multiple vocalists, detailed music backdrops. It shows what hip hop can be like: fresh, so fresh…
