Chico Correa & Electronic Band – [2006] Chico Correa & Electronic Band

Unique blend of latin flavour and electronic sound. Great vocals on top make this a rare find.

For this review, I had to stick on plenty of genre tags. Both jazz fusion and electronic IDM seem fitting descriptions. Then there’s a downtempo or chillout influence. And finally the world and latin tags to locate the music style geographically. And all that back in 2006, released on notoriously good (and still active) netlabel Bump Foot. And if you want to check out more recent stuff by the artist, find them on Bandcamp (latest release from 2020).

Giraffe – [2005] Giraffe

Melancholic melodic indie folk pop prog rock. Boom. Genre keyword density overflow.

Netlabel 12rec., active from 2004 to 2011, is still one of the most relevant names in the game due to their consistently high quality throughout their 64 releases. Giraffe is representative for their roster, with an artsy, yet approachable indie style slightly “left” of Elliot Smith.

Travis Noble – [2006] Outerspace Introspection

Blend of Blade Runner & Star Trek. Although the artist never mentions it, to me this sounds like a tribute.

This review is an advertisement to look out for good review writers: user electrocelt’s list of reviews is a splendid little collection of mostly ambient electronica.

Qk – [2009] 415

Meditative tech house. Long loops, straight beats, simple two-chord harmonies. Great background music.

This oldie from still active (as of 2018) Colombian netlabel Monofonicos mostly plays with sound texture. Both rhythm and harmony loop with only slight variations, while voicing, instruments and effects vary. The result is a meditative musical carpet. Continue reading “Qk – [2009] 415”

jasmin – [2005] EP02

Jazzy postrock. A modern classic, surfing hard on genre boundaries.

This gem of a EP, released at now inactive Berlin netlabel 12rec is surprisingly hard to classify. Although it ticks all the boxes of instrumental postrock, the songs touch everything from pop music and jazz harmonics. Jazz in disguise, so to speak. Continue reading “jasmin – [2005] EP02”
