Aleksi Virta – [2004] ..Meets Torsti At The Space Lounge

Relaxed vibe entering your ears! This ultra-cool release at Monotonik — which sadly is on hiatus at the moment — is really great background music with attitude. It features funky beats and chords, sometimes accompanied by fitting recordings of miscellaneous voices. As usual, I present 3 of my favourite tracks which are described in detail while you can listen to them. Continue reading “Aleksi Virta – [2004] ..Meets Torsti At The Space Lounge”

Pokett – [2004] Your Picture Here

Stephane Garry is the man behind the name Pokett, having released this wonderful 4 track EP on the Sundays in Spring netlabel. It is all about dreamy folk music and ears full of emotional guitar chord carpets. Forget Jack Johnson or Conor Oberst, I like this album much better. It reminds me a bit of Newton Faulkner’s “Handbuilt by Robots”, however it lacks pop music genes. But listen yourself to my two favourite tracks (and download the whole release, of course)… Continue reading “Pokett – [2004] Your Picture Here”

Various Artists – [2004] Swingin’ Singles

Various Artists – [2004] Swingin’ Singles

The Comfort Stand netlabel is one of the strangest out there. It doesn’t focus on experimental sound in the sense of noise, bleep and clicking sounds, but in terms of a colourful mixture of artists, genres and styles. One song is a typical pop song, the next one would fit a ghost ride or seems to be written by someone on drugs. This release is a double album presenting the whole range of strangeness you can find in other releases by this label. Continue reading “Various Artists – [2004] Swingin’ Singles”

Various Artists – [2008] So Much Achieved. So Much Left To Do.

Various Artists - [2008] So Much Achieved. So Much Left To Do.

This album is the 50th release of the netlabel 12rec. from Germany. It covers the range of the label which mainly publishes experimental guitar music with a touch of folk. 17 different tracks wait to be discovered. I present my three favourites in the following. Continue reading “Various Artists – [2008] So Much Achieved. So Much Left To Do.”

Hardstroke – [2009] In Front Of The See Through Eye

Hardstroke - [2009] In Front Of The See Through Eye - Cover art

Merry Christmas! This release doesn’t at all sound like snow flakes or a silent night, but is a furiously vibrant example of a fusion of extremes. Rock guitars, electronic chord clouds, funky bass lines, disco-like beats seamlessly blend together to a very distinct listening experience which casts feelings of euphoria and nostalgia. But just listen yourself to some tracks of this exceptional Bypass netlabel release. Continue reading “Hardstroke – [2009] In Front Of The See Through Eye”

Stay Ali – [2009] Vati Vati EP

Stay Ali - [2009] Vati Vati EP

Stay Ali is a trio from Sweden founded in 2006 by then 15-year-old guys. They produce an energetic mix of techno, electro and disco music. They remind me of Fatboy Slim; especially this release sounds like it was influenced by Justice. If you want some good dance music for a party, get this album! But I better present you two tracks which represent the range of this release: Continue reading “Stay Ali – [2009] Vati Vati EP”

Amish82 – [2009] Shovels And Cava

Amish82 - [2009] Shovels And Cava (Sutemos024)

Phew, what a nice electro release! Amish82 remind me heavily of The Knife and Fischerspooner. While this release is very simplistic in construction, the resulting arrangements sound surprisingly rich and danceable. Some kind of “flaw” are the remix version tracks (6-15) while there are only five original tracks. But those five tracks deliver enough quality for many hours of joyful listening. But hear, judge (and download) yourself… Continue reading “Amish82 – [2009] Shovels And Cava”

Santa Inferno – [2009] Desert Music

Santa Inferno - [2009] Desert MusicThis is the first review I write in which my opinion about the music is ambiguous. Santa Inferno has released this very intense rock album, yet in a – probably artistically justified – horrible sound quality. While I find this style fitting for their more aggressive tracks it spoils my listening experience. Let me show you what I mean by two representative tracks. Continue reading “Santa Inferno – [2009] Desert Music”

Diablo Swing Orchestra – [2009] The Butcher’s Ballroom

Diablo Swing Orchestra – [2009] The Butcher's Ballroom

Take Nightwish’s voice, add a Cello played like Apocalyptica and mix it with a skilled hard rock band and – voilà – you can imagine how the Diablo Swing Orchestra sounds.

Their music is a wild mixture of (partially Symphonic) Metal, Rock, Jazz, Swing and Blues; sometimes they make me think of Mr. Bungle (another great Band, by the way), yet they always stay within the limits of melodic music. Continue reading “Diablo Swing Orchestra – [2009] The Butcher’s Ballroom”

Hallo Peter – [2008] Gutz of Glory

Punchy breakbeat from Germany. Kicking drums and pulsating synth pads for glory!

Hallo Peter - Gutz of Glory

This album popped up at Jamendo when I was searching for free Breakbeat music. This genre is most prominently occupied by artists like The Chemical Brothers or The Crystal Method. While there are some similarities, the obviously German artist of this release has his own characteristic style. The essentials are all there: punching drums, ultra-cool bass riffs, synthetic sound effects. But as I said, something is different: Continue reading “Hallo Peter – [2008] Gutz of Glory”
