  • North Hive – [2015] Gaia

    North Hive – [2015] Gaia

Detailed ambient treasurebox. If you are easily offended by non-musical “noise” in your music, give this release a try anyway. While North Hive heavily uses field recordings for its compositions, the results often sound quite musical. This album was released at Enough Records.

  • Rho – [2010] Cedarleaf

    Rho – [2010] Cedarleaf

Unambient ambient. This release raised the bar for me when it comes to “memorizing” what it sounds like. Should I put it into the ambient category? Or eclectic electronica? Cinematic orchestrations, based on solo guitar melodies, served on a bed of electronic sounds. Not easy to classify. Listen for yourself…

  • cantaloup – [2006] tonight it shows

cantaloup – [2006] tonight it shows

Acoustic post pop. Airy sound scapes made from guitar carpets and synthetic strings, mixed with mellow vocals make for a soothing ambient album. If these 8 calm tracks are not enough, have a look at cantaloup’s Bandcamp profile, where he has released several albums since.

  • Th.e n.d – [2009] Schizophrenic Birth

    Th.e n.d – [2009] Schizophrenic Birth

Minimal downtempo goodness. Berlin artist Th.e n.d. seems to prefer quality over quantity. This EP, released 2009 at the Acustronica netlabel, only contains 3 tracks. Yet every track is distinct in style and remarkably well produced. Unconventional sound combinations and laidback tunes are the common theme.

  • Planet Boelex & Lisa’s Antenna – [2009] Little World (remastered)

Planet Boelex & Lisa’s Antenna – [2009] Little World (remastered)

Ambient electronic masterpiece. Take soft synthetic sounds, tender percussion and female vocals, mix… two artists that stand well for themselves join forces here to showcase what their styles combined sound like; and I like the result! This release makes for some excellent background music, and this is a compliment. Nothing in this delicious sound composition…

  • Miltata – [2010] For the Heterotopia

Miltata – [2010] For the Heterotopia

A cushion made of bleeps. Instrumental electronic music that makes you think of soft acoustic. Loopy, yet never boring ambient melody patterns make for great background music. As usual, two tracks as a preview after the break:

  • Nest – [2007] Nest EP

    Nest – [2007] Nest EP

Perfectly arranged modern classical piano bouquet. Two piano player team up to create very atmospheric music. Several string instruments, woodwind instruments and a dose of effects are woven together beautifully. Six tracks that show that classical composers have indeed left vast musical space undiscovered left to explore…

  • Jay Phonic – [2012] Space Pictures

Jay Phonic – [2012] Space Pictures

Time for more space music this week! This release is part of a larger music donation I received from Machtdose; more details will follow in a later post. Back to the music: softly pulsing synthpads, minutes pass like seconds. Elaborate motives are used sparingly; not to draw to much attention to oneself. It is perfect…

  • Stellardrone – [2011] A Moment Of Stillness

    Stellardrone – [2011] A Moment Of Stillness

Stellardrone is an artist from Lithuania, excelling in the art of creating ambient music that causes neither coma nor nausea. The secret lies in finding the balance between repetition and catchy tunes. This release sounds, while being cold and spacey on the outside, quite warm and meditative.

  • Alex Tiuniaev – [2012] Rachel EP

Alex Tiuniaev – [2012] Rachel EP

Webbed Hand Records specialise on ambient electronic music. This short two track EP from Russian musician Alex Tiuniaev sounds like a relaxed science fiction nostalgia movie soundtrack. Both tracks are good for a short break from anything. Read on for a short description of both tracks and the download link.

  • Tearsfallen – [2012] A Deeper Sense of Nothingness

Tearsfallen – [2012] A Deeper Sense of Nothingness

Not conventional music for not conventional people is the tagline of Hunter Netlabel, specialising in electronic ambient music. This week’s release is from artist Tearsfallen: atmospheric, space movie soundtrack. It also reminds me a bit of the soundtrack of the Portal video game series. Cold and technique ambient sounds-capes, well stirred by urging drum patterns.…

  • Various Artists – [2004] Intelligent Toys 2

    Various Artists – [2004] Intelligent Toys 2

This is my fourth review about a release from the netlabel Sutemos (these were the previous reviews). Intelligent Toys is a series of compilations with cutting-edge to avant-garde electronic music. Back in 2005 when I first downloaded them, I found them too experimental. But this time, they make a furious comeback into my music collection.…

  • Workbench – [2006] Zoo

    Workbench – [2006] Zoo

This ambient release from Kahvi contains over 80 minutes of relaxing background music. No spiritual, new age enlightenment tunes with water effects. But only clear and calm electronic music. I like this kind of music for programming, reading or just relaxing. Like usual, I present two tracks to pull you in, too!

  • Various Artists – [2005] Red, Green, Blue & Other Summer Feelings

Various Artists – [2005] Red, Green, Blue & Other Summer Feelings

The netlabel Sutemos releases excellent electronic music since 2004. This sampler is the first I stumbled into first. It took me some time to discover the beauty of most songs; it is well hidden from the casual listener by slow and silent composition. It is best heard late in the evening in a thoughtful mood.…

  • Iambic² – [2007] Under These Stars, We’ll Sleep Again

Iambic² – [2007] Under These Stars, We’ll Sleep Again

Electronic piano ambient. A smash-hit, considering that it is a forerunner for a niche genre with a niche publishing model in 2007.
