Barcelona university

Barcelona’s university building in the city centre is quite impressive. The entrance hall reminds me of a gothic church, up the stairs it resemble a classic art gallery. Behind the main building lies a small park, which is crowded by cats. My impression: it must be inspiring to work there!

Frankfurt

Some weeks ago I was in Frankfurt for two day. Luckily, the weather was already good enough to enjoy the evening outside — with my camera. The view from Main Tower is great, but I prefer the atmosphere next the river.

DESERTEC studies: AQUA-CSP

AQUA-CSP is one of three conceptual studies which explored different parts of the DESERTEC project, a concept which relies on solar power from the world’s desserts as a major energy source for Europe. In previous posts I already talked about the two other studies MED-CSP andTRANS-CSP, the first focused on generation, the second on transportation of the generated electricity. This article deals with the third, often overlooked, aspect if this undertaking: desalination of huge quantities of sea water.

IlKobra – [2010] Cogito Ergo Beat

This week’s release is unusually hard electronic music by released last year at the Sostanze netlabel. It features monotonic, stomping, pure Breakbeats or Drum & Bass — I’m not so sure about the exact classification. Six tracks with well chosen names like Preludio or Santo Hertz await to thrill your nerves and your neighbours if you are blessed with decently sized speakers.

Regensburg by night

Last time I posted photos of Regensburg, I only was equipped with my mobile phone. This time I took photos by night, but with a much better camera. Danube and the cathedral really stand out, even against the cloudy weather that night.

Musée du quai Branly

This museum for indigenous art from the whole world is located very close to the Eiffel Tower in Paris. For me, it was one of few mandatory places to visit. It was absolutely worth it. The modern exhibition planning allows you to both visit everything in a linear tour, while still allowing to directly enter every corner of the museum directly. Decoration is minimal to not distract from the impressive exhibits. The next time when I visit Paris, this museum will be on my list again.

How to find free music

20 years ago, when you wanted to find new music, you went to a record store or switched on the radio. Things have quite changed since then. In this post I list starting points for searching good free music on the internet.

Sunset wallpapers

Time for some new wallpapers. This time sunset is the topic, while none of the photos shows the sun itself. Even the latest picture, taken on Munich’s “Stachus”, only has an artificial sun plus lense reflections. The silhouettes were captured on the hill in Olympiapark. Many people were there to watch the fading light from above.

The Best Creative Commons Music Moments 2010

A Best Of album representing all free music released last year… that sounds ambitious. The Phlow magazine tried it anyway. While I am hesitant that this monster compilation really includes all great tracks from last year, there are many tracks I would have missed otherwise. So as usual I selected some tracks which I think you should have heared. The complete release contains over 100 songs, so this selection by far cannot cover all genres.

Louvre

Happy new year! I spent the end of 2010 in Paris with some friends. One of the highlights certainly was the Louvre. We only had time to visit the Egyptian collection and the well-known paintings of the great masters. While the first collection was quite pleasant, the famous paintings were too crowded. Below are some impressions of the visit:
